Relay for Life in Santa Clarita raises $361,000 in funding

Event managed to raise support for the fight against cancer

Earlier this month, Kimberley Ellison and Gina Kaufman of the Santa Clarita Allstate Insurance agency participated in the Relay For Life at the local Central Park. The event featured more than 1,600 participants and managed to raise some $361,000 in funding for the American Cancer Society. The event itself is part of an overarching initiative to raise awareness of cancer and help raise funding for cancer research, treatment, and other issues related to the disease.

Relay for Life had ambitious, but humble beginnings

Relay for Life began in 1985, launched by Doctor Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Tacoma, Washington. Klatt had been searching for ways to raise money for his local American Cancer Society facility and decided to combine his efforts with one of his most loved hobbies: Running marathons. In May of 1985, Klatt began a 24-hour marathon at the University of Puget Sound's Baker Stadium. During the marathon, Klatt managed to raise $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life has grown from that point, with similar marathons being help throughout the United States.

Relatively few people know the benefits of insurance coverage when it comes to battling cancer

The funding that Relay for Life has raised for the American Cancer Society has gone toward various initiatives concerning the fight against cancer. Some of this funding is used to promote cancer awareness; helping people better understand the disease and what can be done to beat it. Notably, insurance coverage is sometimes overlooked when it comes to cancer, usually because many people do not understand whether or not their insurance policies offer coverage for the medical issues that are involved with the disease.

Supplemental health insurance plans are often needed when it comes to cancer and other major illnesses

Typically, cancer is covered by a comprehensive health insurance policy but can drain a family’s savings or even drive them into debt with “out of pocket expenses” like time off of work, travel and some medications. Supplemental coverage is a low cost way to close this gap and protect a family’s financial well being. Allstate offers these types of supplemental plans that are meant to cover major illnesses and accidents. The Santa Clarita insurance agency has helped people better understand how insurance coverage can help them and their loved ones beat cancer.
